Review: Weezer-[Blue Album]
Weezer - Blue Album Review
So in starting a new blog i have decided to try myself in reviewing albums for fun. I have absolutely zero experience in reviewing so this may be extremely unprofessional. Keep in mind these are just my opinions and so regardless of my enjoyment of the album you should still give it a shot to get your own opinion.
Release Date: May 10 1994
Label: DGC
Genre: Alternative Rock/Power Pop
Producer: Rick Ocasek
Lenght: 41:17
Weezer's first album released almost 20 years ago is an awesome 10 song pack filled with energetic, emotionally driven and fun songs. From the acoustic opening of My Name is Jonas to Only in Dream's epic outro the album never lets you down. Here is the album breakdown.
My Name is Jonas: An awesome opener about Rivers's brother's insurance problems. Also the only Weezer song with any contribution by forming member Jason Cropper before his departure from the band. From the memorable opening rift to the harmonica solo this song is a blast! It was so popular that despite not being a single it managed to achieve airplay on radio stations. 9/10
No One Else: My personal low point on the album. A song about a man obsessed with his girlfriend and desire to have her all to himself. Singing about how "She never leaves the house" and "When i leave she puts her make up on the shelf". The song's different instruments seem like they all blend together and sounds just a bit above the homogeneous second half of their later green album. Despite that it sets the stage for the next song and it is kind of catchy. 5/10
The World Has Turned and Left Me Here: This song follows the same man from No One Else after he gets abandoned by the girl and can't figure out why. The man is left in complete denial making love to her sweet memory and talking with her photograph for hour. One of my favorite song on the album, which is ironic since it follows my least favorite song so directly. A catchy lead guitar rift and great emotional lyrics make this one of the best songs on this album. 10/10
Buddy Holly: Known for its Happy Days inspired music video, Buddy Holly is another one of the album's best tracks. Talking about a friend from Cuomo's childhood who was being teased for her Asian origins. One of Weezer's most successful and well known single its strange to think it barely made it on the album.
A great catchy tune and definitely one of the album's highlights. 9/10
Undone the Sweater Song: Originally intended as a sad song it is perceived by many as more of a comedic song because of its silly lyrics making allusion to an unraveling sweater. Fairly repetitive in structure it is none of the less a great song and one that had a significant impact on Weezer's career. 8/10
Surf Wax America: A fun song about steping out of the everyday life rat-race and taking an alternate path. In the case of the song going the surfer route. Simpler in terms of lyrics compared to the rest of the album it is still a pretty decent and enjoyable tune. 8/10
Say it Ain't So: A favorite of me and my room mate Alex, Say it ain't so is perhaps the most powerful and emotional songs on this album. Writen about cuomo's experience with his step father's alcohol problem it is perhaps one of the most emotional songs writen by the band. With an amazing guitar solo, a badass bass line and some powerful, powerful lyrics this is definitely one of Weezer's best songs. 10/10
In the Garage: A song about being by yourself in the safety of your garage. Talking about Cuomo's love for all things Kiss and D&D and touching on the subject of his shyness "In the Garage, i feel safe. No one cares about my ways.". At first i did not care too much for this song, it is definitely less energetic than the rest of the songs on the album, but after a few listens it grew quite a bit on me. 8/10
Holiday: This song brings to mind distant tropical locations, even more so than their later Island in the Sun Track. A catchy chorus and bassy smooth bridge makes this song another great adition on the album. Sadly often overlooked when compared to other tracks on the album it is definitely worth your attention.8/10
Only in Dreams: The longest song of the album. It has the longest solo on the album and near the end fades into near complete silence, which fooled me quite a few times into thinking the song was ending and then bam it comes back for more. A very mellow song that ends with a punch it is a great closing song for the album. 9/10
Overall Weezer's Blue Album is a tight package of great songs that won't let you down from beginning to end, and even tho it is almost 20 years old this album definitely stands the test of time to this day.
Overall Score: 8.4/10
